Flicka Baggins and Pojke Took

It's snowing outside. I heard Flicka wailing in distress and bewilderment, and followed her upstairs. She led me over to the windowsill and stared out at the falling snow, then started miaowing again.

Pojke's also staring at the snow, but with great excitement - he keeps putting his paws up to the window. If I could be sure they wouldn't panic and run off (and they're not fully immunised yet), I'd try opening the front door to see what they make of it.

We've already decided the cats are Hobbits - they're small, like six meals a day and are suspicious of anything new. Their reaction to the snow confirms that Pojke is a Took and Flicka is a Baggins.

Ps. J told Flicka off for attacking his foot last night and she visibly, audibly sulked (as in, sighed and rested her head on her paws) then came and nuzzled him. THEY ARE TOO CHARMING.

Cats, day 4.

Pojke is the bravest little cat who ever catted.

Just now Puss, the /huge/ ginger tom who lives next door, blundered in through our broken catflap then started crying because he couldn't get out again, so I went out into the hallway to soothe him and help him out. Pojke followed me, cautiously.

Puss graciously accepted my fussings, then noticed Pojke behind me and Peered at him. Pojke growled, arched his back and stood his fur on end and all the tricks to make himself look bigger, but even with that he's still, like, a fifth of Puss's size. Puss ignored him at first and started to sniff in the direction of where Flicka was hiding. Pojke puffed up even more and growled more deeply and swished his tail - THAT'S MY SISTER, MAN.

Puss backed off and retreated to the front door, and looked imploringly at me to let him out. I did, then turned around and saw Flicka nuzzling the hell out of her brother.

HERO. TINY HERO. They both got treats.

Moar pictures, because seriously I am so glad to have my camera back and not to have to rely on rubbish camera phone.Collapse )

Wedding ideas

We're a fair way from starting any serious planning because we're holding back until M is better, but so far:

Things we definitely want:

- not in a church
- no ties
- I'm having a Best Woman, [twitter.com profile] frldrosselmeyer , and my sister and p'haps another friend as bridesmaids.
- I am not promising to obey J, except later in private in a subby sort of way.
- both my parents are "giving me away".

It's going to be outside as long as we're lucky with the weather, definitely-maybe Puzzlewood. J's family are running with our idea to have a Tolkien theme: him as Battlefield!Thorin Oakenshield, his parents as Tom Bombadil and an Ent, Granny as Smaug...

... THIS IS WEIRD. IS THIS REAL?

Kitties, day 3.

Pojke and Flicka were crying for their breakfast just before 7, but I have a heart of stone and managed to hold out until 8. That's still earlier than we normally need to get up during the week, unless I'm doing an early shift, but I figured it's good for us to have a bit of time to have a cuppa and frolic with the kitties before J goes to work (I've never seen him so reluctant to leave the house).

Looking stylish and red curtainy on the sofa:

^ that was Pojke discovering the keyboard.

They're using their drinking fountain like pros, and they've just discovered the joys of sitting on the windowsill (and the keyboard). They're off to the vet on Thursday morning.

On kitties, and things

So after a week of boredom and depression and anguish - that was horrible, but not all that bad in the grand scheme of things because my coping skills work for me these days - and above all, catlessness, we finally hit refresh on Gumtree for the millionth time and there were a pair of 16-week-old kittens free to a good home, about twenty minutes drive away. Lady already has two kittens and a toddler, just found out she's pregnant, and has had to go "/hell/, no" and give up these two.

So we have Flicka (FLEE-ka, Swedish for girl), who's black and white, and Pojke (POY-ka, Swedish for boy), who's a dark tabby. They're the sweetest things and their previous owner was spot on about their personalities. Pojke barges on in to new situations to test the water (literally-actually, in the case of their drinking fountain), while Flicka shrewdly waits to make sure the New Thing isn't going to Make Them Dead before she approaches.

Kitty pictures behind cut.Collapse )

Like puppies, they sleep a /lot/. They'll charge around for a while then guzzle some food, then go all post-prandial and fhlompy. Pojke was purring and snoring at the same time while cuddled up on J, it was adorable.

They love warm things, ie. us. When we went to bed we encouraged them to sleep in their own bed by putting a hot water bottle half-filled with warm water under the cushion.

We bought a fancy-ass pet fountain, where the water goes through a filter then down a waterfall and into a little bowl, to encourage them to drink and they sit staaaring at it like it's a lava lamp. I... am as well, it makes the water all shimmery and hypnotic. Not sure they understand the point of it yet - they might have had a drink or just sniffed the water.

They're eating jellied food - and loads of it! - at the minute but for the sake of their teeth they definitely need to start on dry kibble as well. I'll ask the vet tomorrow about switching them.

Tomorrow at the vet I need to book them in for all their vaccinations, health checks, neutering and microchipping. Also to ask advice on deworming and defleaing, and how long to wait before they can go outside.

They are chilled as fuck, gosh. So independent compared to puppies! I'm feeling really guilty, actually, because I was raised with a dog around and I love their neediness and clumsy enthusiasm, but am totally charmed by the kitties' grace (they're so graceful. Mostly) and charisma, and I have to get over this idea that one must be either a cat or a dog person.

Last night, once we were sure everything was safe and they were settled down to sleep, we went downstairs to our room*, brought the iPod dock ("I'm going to put on some music, quietly, they must be psytrance cats," fretted J last night) and other supplies, and k-holed. Mine was cat-themed to the point of ridiculousness - loads of sensations of kneading and nuzzling and purring. Then a little movie played in my head, sort of in the style of the music video for "Tais-toi mon coeur", a kind of sepia cartoon about a little archivist who was trying to record /everything/ - scribbling with a quill, rushing around with a camera, tapping on a smartphone, sending telegrams - and as he/she/zie was doing so (the face was flickering through different gender presentations), I could see they were made of pages which were peeling off and drifting off in the wind, and they were dwindling to nothing. Visuals like that tend to lead to long reflective conversations while still under the influence, then fade to a nice afterglow and a vague lesson afterwards - needless to say I fret too much about doing and recording All The Things, and then freeze and do very little.

My target is to post one LJ comment or one Facebook message a day, while I build up confidence again (I keep coming across conversations I find interesting and share with J, and he prompts me to join in rather than just lurking, and it's time I listened to him). It begins!

* our house is upside down. It's awesome.
